Questions about churches in Pennsylvania

How many churches are in Pennsylvania? 15,135 congregations of all faiths, counted by the 2020 U.S. Religion Census. Public maps list ~17,000 church locations, which count places rather than congregations.

How many churches are in Philadelphia? Philadelphia addresses hold 12% of the state's church locations on the map, more than three times Pittsburgh's share.

Why do maps list more Pennsylvania churches than the census counts? A closed church can stay on a map, and a congregation with a chapel or second campus gets two listings. Both push the map count up. Congregations without a listing pull it down, and in Pennsylvania the net effect is a smaller gap than in most states.

Can I order a Pennsylvania church list? Yes. You can order Pennsylvania churches as a state file from the order panel on this page. The file has one row per church location with the phone and website the church publishes, and its email with the page it came from where the church publishes one. We update and verify your list when you order, so you receive a fresh list. Delivered within 24 hours, usually much sooner.

What these numbers don't show

Township totals. Map addresses use postal city names, which often differ from the township or borough a church is in.

Merged parishes. A church building closed after a merger may still be listed.

Whether a listed church still meets. The open status comes from the map source, unchecked by us.

Attendance. The map counts places, and a busy parish and an almost empty chapel are one row each.
