How many churches are in New York?
New York State had 13,828 congregations of all faiths in the 2020 U.S. Religion Census (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). That is the figure to use for congregations. It counts synagogues, mosques and temples along with churches.
Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) has ~17,000 church locations listed on public maps in New York, number 7 of 51 (states and DC) and 3.9% of the US map count. The map count runs 23% above the census figure, because a listing is a place, not a congregation: closed churches can stay listed, and a church with a second site gets a second entry. Several congregations sharing one building can show up as one. For its population, New York has few church locations: 85.3 per 100,000 residents against 129.3 for the US, number 43 of 51.

Baptist tags lead less clearly in New York than in the US as a whole: Baptist and Roman Catholic tags are almost level, and Pentecostal is a distant third. Anglican or Episcopal and Jehovah's Witnesses rows complete the eight largest tags.
Map category tags, not denominational shares.
| Category | Places |
|---|---|
| Christian, tradition not given | ~12,000 |
| Baptist | ~1,500 |
| Roman Catholic | ~1,500 |

| Pentecostal | ~640 |
| Protestant, denomination not given | ~180 |
| Anglican or Episcopal | ~160 |
| Jehovah's Witnesses | ~80 |
Counts are rounded.
New York churches are more likely than average to name a website on the map: 80% of the listings do, against 77% nationally. That matters for a contact list, because the emails in it will come from the church's own site.
Questions about churches in New York
How many churches are in New York State? 13,828 congregations of all faiths, according to the 2020 U.S. Religion Census. Public maps list more church locations, ~17,000, because they count places rather than congregations.
How many churches are in New York City? This page has no single city total. The "New York" row covers addresses written that way, which can be anywhere in the city; Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens neighbourhoods such as Jamaica are separate rows in the table. Queens addresses usually carry a neighbourhood name, so most of Queens falls outside the top 15, and adding up the city's rows still leaves much of it out.
Does New York have fewer churches per person than other states? On the map, yes. New York is number 43 of 51 for church locations per resident, with 85.3 per 100,000 people.
Is there a New York church email list? Yes. You can order New York churches as a state file from the order panel on this page. Each row is a church location with the phone and website it publishes and its email, where it publishes one, with the source page. The list names no pastors. We update and verify your list when you order, so you receive a fresh list. Delivered within 24 hours, usually much sooner.
