AHA and CMS hospital counts compared, with CMS counts by state, type, ownership and critical access.
Hospital email list
The American Hospital Association counts 6,100 hospitals in the United States (Fast Facts on U.S. Hospitals, 2026, from its 2024 Annual Survey). The CMS Hospital General Information file of 2026-07-22 lists ~5,400 hospitals in the 50 states and DC, one row per CMS Certification Number (CCN). That file covers hospitals enrolled in Medicare. It has no rehabilitation hospital type and only 5 long-term hospitals, both types that AHA counts. Each row of our list is one hospital, with the main or department inboxes it publishes on its own website, the page where we found each email and the date we last verified it. No row holds a named executive or staff member. You can order it now, nationwide or by state.

Counts are rounded.
These are counts from the CMS file, rounded. The list may hold fewer rows, because our checks remove hospitals that have closed since the file date. The ~70 hospitals in Puerto Rico and other territories are not in the state counts.
By hospital type
Acute care hospitals are the largest group in the CMS file, followed by critical access hospitals and psychiatric hospitals. Each hospital has one type, so the rows add up to the total.
| Hospital type | Hospitals |
|---|---|
| Acute Care Hospitals | ~3,000 |
| Critical Access Hospitals | ~1,400 |
| Psychiatric | ~620 |
| Acute Care - Veterans Administration | ~130 |
| Childrens | ~90 |
| Rural Emergency Hospital | ~40 |
| Acute Care - Department of Defense | ~30 |
| Long-term | 5 |
Counts are rounded.
The labels are CMS's own. "Childrens" is CMS's spelling for children's hospitals. The hospital_type column will carry the same label on every row, so you can keep the types you sell to.

Where the data comes from
The list starts from CMS Hospital General Information, the Medicare list of hospitals that CMS publishes on its Provider Data Catalog, file of 2026-07-22. We match each hospital to its own website and record the main and department emails and phone numbers published there, with the page URL. We check each email with the receiving mail server and leave out hospitals we can't confirm as open.

Questions about the hospital list
Can I buy the hospital list now?
Yes. Choose nationwide or up to 10 states in the order panel on this page. It costs $299 nationwide, and state files start from $39. Delivered within 24 hours, usually much sooner. Nationwide files are verified and sent within 48 hours.
How many hospitals are in the US?
AHA counts 6,100, of which 5,121 are community hospitals (2024 Annual Survey, published in Fast Facts 2026). The CMS file of 2026-07-22 lists ~5,400 Medicare-enrolled hospitals in the 50 states and DC. Federal hospitals are close in both (205 federally owned in CMS, 210 in AHA); the gap is mainly rehabilitation and long-term hospitals, which the CMS file barely covers. The hospital statistics page explains the difference and gives the CMS counts by state.
Does the list include hospital executives?
No. The list will be of organizations only. Each row will be one hospital with its main and department inboxes, such as a general contact address or a purchasing or careers inbox the hospital publishes. We will not add the names, titles or personal emails of executives, physicians or other staff.
Are critical access hospitals included?
Yes. The CMS file lists ~1,400 critical access hospitals in 45 states. Federal rules limit a critical access hospital to 25 inpatient beds and an annual average stay of 96 hours or less (42 CFR 485.620), and it must be more than a 35-mile drive from another hospital (15 miles on mountainous terrain or secondary roads), unless its state certified it as a necessary provider before 2006 (42 CFR 485.610). The hospital_type column will mark them.
Does the list include clinics and physician offices?
No. It will cover hospitals only. For physician practices, see the physician email list, which starts from the CMS NPPES register.
Can I get hospitals by health system?
Not as a separate column at first. The CMS file has no health system field, so a hospital's system name will appear only where its own website names it.
Can I send email to hospitals legally?
In the US, CAN-SPAM allows commercial email to businesses if you identify yourself, include a postal address and an opt-out, and honor opt-outs. This is general information, not legal advice. Read is buying an email list legal?
