Veterinary practices

How many veterinarians are in the US?

There were 133,475 veterinarians in the United States at the end of 2025, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). That figure counts people: AVMA members and nonmembers, leaving out nonmembers born before 1955 or who earned their degree before 1981. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) counts fewer, 83,900 veterinarian jobs in May 2025, partly because its survey leaves out self-employed owners; AVMA's total also includes veterinarians not working in practice.

Practices are a different count. BLS counted 36,619 private veterinary services establishments in the fourth quarter of 2025 (QCEW, NAICS 541940). QCEW counts only worksites with employees covered by unemployment insurance, so a practice run by its owner alone is not in it. Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) has ~41,000 veterinary clinic locations listed on public maps. Maps keep some closed practices and list some practices twice, so this is a count of listings, not of open practices. The strictest version of our count, ~34,000 listings both marked open and at a confidence of 0.8 or higher, is below the BLS figure.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates 133,475 US veterinarians as of December 31, 2025, counting AVMA members and most nonmembers.

What counts as a veterinarian or a vet clinic?

The figures on this page count people, jobs, establishments or map listings, so they don't contradict each other. Our own counts are rounded; the others are quoted exactly.

AVMA has no employment information for 28,343 of the veterinarians it counts, and its total is not limited to veterinarians in practice. A practice usually employs several veterinarians, which is why the establishment and listing counts are far below the count of people.

Why the map count is higher than the BLS count

The map lists more veterinary clinic locations than BLS counts establishments. Three reasons push the map count above the BLS figure:

  • Stale listings. A practice that closes or moves can keep its map listing. ~4,500 of the listings carry no open or closed status.
  • Several listings for one practice. A practice and its emergency or specialty service at the same address, or a practice under an old and a new name, can each have a listing. Some listings are named after one veterinarian at a practice that has its own listing.
  • Practices BLS doesn't count. QCEW covers establishments with paid employees, so owner-only and some mobile practices are missing from it but can be on the map.

We left out in-store and pop-up vaccination clinics, grooming, boarding, shelters and rescues, even when the map files them under veterinary care. Counting each street address once gives ~38,000, closer to the BLS figure.

Vet clinic listings by state

California has the most veterinary clinic locations on the map, ~4,000, followed by Texas with ~3,500 and Florida with ~3,200. The table shows map listings by the state of their address, with the BLS establishment count for the same state, the rate of listings per 100,000 residents and each state's share of the US.

Counts are rounded.

Map counts are from Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23), rounded. BLS establishments are private establishments in NAICS 541940 for the fourth quarter of 2025, exact. Rates use US Census Bureau population estimates for July 1, 2025. Contains data from Overture Maps Foundation, licensed under CDLA Permissive 2.0.

Which states have the most vet clinics per resident?

Rural and mountain states have the most veterinary clinic locations per resident. Montana has 21.7 per 100,000 residents, Vermont 21.1 and Wyoming 20.6. We haven't tested why; a state's rate also depends on how many of its listings are stale or repeated. Large states sit lower: California has 10.2 per 100,000 and New York 9.1. DC has the lowest rate, 5.8.

The map and BLS counts differ slightly by state, and neither is exact. The map count is above the BLS count in most states, furthest in Illinois (~1,400 listings against 977 establishments). In Idaho, Hawaii, Delaware, Rhode Island and DC the BLS count is the higher one; Idaho has ~250 listings against 325 establishments. For any one state, read the two counts side by side.

Vet clinics by practice type

Most listings are companion animal practices or don't say what animals they treat. We read the type from each listing's map category and name, so a practice called "Equine Clinic" counts as equine and one called "Main Street Veterinary Clinic" counts as not stated.

Map listings by practice type, read from category and name.

Practice typeListings on public maps
Companion animal~20,000
Not stated~18,000
Emergency~1,300
Equine~980
Specialty or referral~910
Mixed or large animal~100

Counts are rounded.

Each count is a floor for its type, because many emergency, equine and mixed practices carry a plain name and fall under "Not stated" or "Companion animal". AVMA reports how veterinarians split between companion animal, mixed, equine, food animal and laboratory animal work, which is the better source for the shape of the profession.

What these numbers don't show

Open practices. A map listing can outlive the practice, and the source's open or closed status is often missing.

Veterinarians by state. AVMA's count is national, and none of the counts on this page counts veterinarians in each state.

Practices without a listing. Some practices, especially mobile and house-call practices, have no map listing.

Ownership. None of these counts says which practices belong to a corporate group.

Practice size. A one-veterinarian clinic and a large referral hospital each count once.
