Churches

How many churches are in Ohio?

Ohio had 13,906 congregations of all faiths in the 2020 U.S. Religion Census (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022).

On public maps Ohio has ~17,000 church locations (Overture Maps places, release of 2026-09-23), number 6 of 51 (states and DC) and 3.9% of the US total. It runs 23% above the census figure. By the size of that gap in percentage terms Ohio is number 20 of 51, close to the middle. A map keeps some churches that have closed, can list one congregation twice, and lists each campus of a church separately, so its count is an upper bound. Ohio has 143.8 church locations per 100,000 residents, somewhat above the US rate of 129.3 (number 19 of 51).

Ohio's named tags follow the US order: Baptist first, then Roman Catholic, then Pentecostal. Anglican or Episcopal, "Protestant, denomination not given" and Jehovah's Witnesses rows complete the eight largest tags.

Map category tags, not denominational shares.

What these numbers don't show

Metro areas. Greater Cleveland or Cincinnati is spread across many city rows.

Mainline denominations. No Methodist or Lutheran row is among Ohio's largest tags, so those churches can't be counted from the map.

Churches open today. A status of "open" comes from the map source.

Congregation size. Large and small churches are one listing each.
