How many churches are in Michigan?
Michigan had 9,694 congregations of all faiths in the 2020 U.S. Religion Census (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). Michigan's mosques and synagogues are in that figure too.
Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) lists ~13,000 church locations in Michigan, 31% more than the census figure and number 14 of 51 (states and DC) for the size of that gap in percentage terms. The map count is number 13 of 51, 2.9% of the US total. Per resident, Michigan sits just under the US rate: 125.7 church locations per 100,000 residents, against 129.3, number 28 of 51.
More Michigan listings carry a status and a website than the US average: 87% are marked open by their source and 84% name a website, both above the US shares (83% and 77%). So stale listings with no status explain less of the gap here; second listings for one church and new churches since 2020 are likelier causes.

Michigan compared with the US
Among the denomination tags (leaving out the generic groups that name no denomination), Roman Catholic is second in Michigan after Baptist, with Pentecostal third, the same order as on the US map. Anglican or Episcopal, "Protestant, denomination not given" and Jehovah's Witnesses rows complete the eight largest tags.
Map category tags, not denominational shares.

As everywhere, most listings carry only "Christian, tradition not given", so the named rows show labels, not the size of each denomination.
Questions about churches in Michigan
How many churches are in Michigan? The 2020 U.S. Religion Census counted 9,694 congregations of all faiths. Public maps list ~13,000 church locations, a count of places that is higher than the number of congregations.
Which city in Michigan has the most churches? Detroit, with nearly four times Grand Rapids' count. Grand Rapids is second, followed by Flint and Lansing.
Why is the Michigan map count above the census figure? A map lists places and the census lists congregations. Second campuses, churches listed under two names and congregations started after 2020 add map listings without adding census congregations, and a closed church can stay on the map.

What these numbers don't show
Closed or merged parishes. A church building that closed after a merger may still be listed.
Suburban totals. Detroit's suburbs are split into their own city rows, mostly below the top 15.
Churches open today. "Marked open" is the map source's status, not a check of each church.
Attendance. Each listing counts once, whatever its size.
