How many churches are in Indiana?

The 2020 U.S. Religion Census counted 9,028 congregations of all faiths in Indiana (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). For congregations, that is the figure to cite.

Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) lists ~11,000 church locations in Indiana, 24% more than the census, which puts the state at number 18 of 51 (states and DC) by the size of the gap in percentage terms. Repeat listings and churches with several sites likely account for some of the difference, and so may churches founded after 2020. The map count is 2.5% of the US total, number 15 of 51. Indiana has 159.9 church locations per 100,000 residents, above the US rate of 129.3.

Five rows are in northern Indiana: Fort Wayne, South Bend and Elkhart, plus Gary and Hammond near Chicago. Muncie, Anderson, Kokomo and Marion are mid-sized cities in the center, and Bloomington and Lafayette are university towns. The suburbs north of Indianapolis, such as Carmel and Fishers, don't make the top 15. The 15 cities hold 38% of the state's church locations.

What these numbers don't show

Amish and Mennonite congregations. Many meet in homes or plain buildings and may have no map listing.

Churches open today. The map source's "open" status is not a visit.

Suburban growth. Hamilton County suburbs are split into small city rows.

Denominations. Most listings carry only a generic tag.
