Where churches in Alabama are
Alabama's churches are spread across many small cities. Birmingham leads with 6.8% of the state's church locations, followed by Mobile, Montgomery and Huntsville. After Tuscaloosa, the list is a run of smaller places with similar counts: Florence, Dothan, Bessemer, Anniston, Gadsden, Decatur, Opelika, Phenix City, Athens and Cullman.
| City | Listed on public maps |
|---|---|
| Birmingham | ~990 |

| Tuscaloosa | ~220 |
| Florence | ~210 |

| Bessemer | ~200 |
| Anniston | ~190 |
| Gadsden | ~190 |
| Decatur | ~180 |
| Opelika | ~160 |
| Phenix City | ~150 |
| Athens | ~150 |

Alabama compared with the US
Baptist tags are far more common on Alabama's map than in the national table, and Anglican or Episcopal tags outnumber Roman Catholic ones. As everywhere, the largest group carries only "Christian, tradition not given", so the table is a rough picture of map labels, not of denominations.
Map category tags, not denominational shares.
| Category | Places |
|---|---|
| Christian, tradition not given | ~8,500 |
| Baptist | ~4,400 |
| Religious organization with a worship name | ~820 |
| Pentecostal | ~310 |
| Anglican or Episcopal | ~220 |
| Roman Catholic | ~170 |
| Jehovah's Witnesses | ~40 |
| Protestant, denomination not given | ~30 |
Counts are rounded.
Two gaps against the US matter for anyone using map data here. Fewer Alabama church listings are marked open (78%, against 83% nationally), so more have no status. And fewer name a website (67%, against 77%), which limits what can be learned about each church from its own site.

What these numbers don't show
Rural churches without a listing. A small country church may not be on the map at all.
Closed churches. A listing with no status may belong to a church that has shut.
Baptist conventions. A Baptist tag doesn't say which convention or association a church belongs to.
Membership. A count of places says nothing about the size of each congregation.
