Trucking carriers

Trucking companies in Maryland

Baltimore has more trucking carriers than any other Maryland city, yet the Washington suburbs hold more in total: nine of the 15 largest trucking cities sit in Montgomery, Prince George's and Charles counties or on their edge at Laurel. The FMCSA Company Census File of 2026-10-03 lists ~21,000 active FMCSA-registered carriers with an MCS-150 update in the last 24 months at a Maryland physical address. Maryland ranks 15 of 51 (states and DC) and holds 2.3% of the US register. With 334.6 carriers per 100,000 residents, it sits above the US rate of 267.6. The count is an upper bound for trucking companies, because private fleets, passenger carriers and dormant registrations are in it too.

Nine of Maryland's 15 largest trucking cities are Washington suburbs, and together they hold more carriers than Baltimore and its two suburbs in the table.

Where trucking companies in Maryland are

Baltimore holds about one Maryland carrier in thirteen. Silver Spring is second, and the rest of the Washington side follows close behind: Gaithersburg, Hyattsville, Laurel, Upper Marlboro, Rockville, Waldorf, Bowie and Beltsville. The Baltimore side adds only Glen Burnie and Westminster. Frederick and Hagerstown, on the I-70 corridor to the west, both rank in the top five, and Salisbury is the only Eastern Shore city on the list.

Taken together, these 15 cities hold about a third of Maryland's carriers. A carrier counts once, at the physical address on its MCS-150, so a company with a yard near the port and an office in the suburbs appears under one city only.

Maryland compared with the US

Small carriers make up most of Maryland's register, much as in the rest of the country. 49% report one power unit, close to the US share of 50%, but carriers with 11 or more power units are scarcer than in most states: about one in sixteen, against about one in thirteen nationally.

No power units reported~790
1 power unit~10,000
2 to 5~7,100
6 to 10~1,400
11 to 50~1,100
51 to 100~120
More than 100~90

Counts are rounded.

31% of Maryland carriers are intrastate-only, below the US figure of 40%. ~2,100 carriers got a USDOT number in the last 12 months, about one in ten, slightly under the national share. Freight brokers are thin on the ground. Maryland has ~280 active property-broker authorities, 13.4 per 1,000 carriers, a ratio in the bottom quarter of the 51.

Questions about trucking companies in Maryland

How many trucking companies are there in Maryland? Carriers with a Maryland address and an MCS-150 filed in the last two years number ~21,000. Fewer are for-hire trucking companies: contractors, landscapers and distributors register their own trucks as carriers too.

Are there more trucking companies around Baltimore or around Washington? Around Washington, if you add up the cities in the table. Baltimore is the single largest city, but the nine Washington-suburb places in the top 15 together hold more than twice Baltimore's count.

Are Maryland trucking companies small? Mostly. About half report a single power unit, and the share of fleets with 11 or more trucks is among the lowest of any state.

Can I order a Maryland trucking company list? Yes. You can order Maryland trucking companies as a state file from the order panel on this page. Each row carries the carrier's USDOT number, power units and the date of its latest MCS-150. We update and verify your list when you order, so you receive a fresh list. Delivered within 24 hours, usually much sooner.

What these numbers don't show

Carriers based in DC, Virginia or Delaware. A carrier working the Port of Baltimore counts in the state on its MCS-150.

Unincorporated places. Much of suburban Maryland has no city government, so carriers file postal names such as Silver Spring or Upper Marlboro that cover wide areas.

Whether a carrier is hauling. A recent filing shows a live registration, not current loads.
