How many churches are in Washington?
Washington State had 6,196 congregations of all faiths in the 2020 U.S. Religion Census (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). The figure covers temples, mosques and synagogues as well as churches.
Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) lists ~6,700 church locations on public maps in Washington, only 8% more than the census figure. Of the 51 states and DC, Washington is number 37 by the size of that gap in percentage terms, counting from the largest. The state has 1.5% of the US map count (number 25 of 51) and one of the lower rates per resident: 83.7 church locations per 100,000 people against 129.3 for the US, number 45 of 51.

East of the Cascades, Spokane is third in the state, and Yakima and Kennewick also make the list. Vancouver, across the Columbia River from Portland, is fourth, and Bellingham is the northernmost entry. The 15 cities hold 40% of Washington's church locations.
Washington compared with the US
Baptist is the largest denomination tag in Washington, as it is nationally, and, as on the US map, Roman Catholic comes third, behind the "religious organization with a worship name" group, which names no denomination. Among the denomination tags alone, Washington follows the US order: Baptist, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal. Jehovah's Witnesses and Anglican or Episcopal rows complete the eight largest tags.

Metro Seattle as a whole. Its suburbs are split over many city rows.
Closures since the listing was made. The source's open flag can lag behind a church closing.
How many people attend. The map holds no attendance figure.
