How many churches are in Utah?
The 2020 U.S. Religion Census counted 6,018 congregations of all faiths in Utah (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). In Utah, use that figure: public maps miss most of these congregations.
Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) lists only ~1,600 church locations in Utah, 27% of the census figure. No other state's map count falls so far short of its census count. On the map, Utah has the fewest church locations per resident of the 50 states and DC: 46.0 per 100,000, against 129.3 for the US. The census counts congregations, and several congregations that share one building can appear on a map as a single place. Some meeting places are not listed at all, and our method merges listings with the same name in one ZIP code, which shrinks the count further where many buildings carry the same church name.

On the map, Utah's church locations follow the Wasatch Front. Salt Lake City has the most, 11% of the state's listings, and Ogden, West Valley City, Sandy, Provo, West Jordan, Orem, Murray, Layton and Taylorsville fill most of the rest of the top 15.
