How many churches are in Mississippi?
Mississippi had 7,182 congregations of all faiths in the 2020 U.S. Religion Census (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022).
For its population, Mississippi has more church locations on public maps than any other state: 328.4 per 100,000 residents, number 1 of 51 (states and DC) and about two and a half times the US rate of 129.3. Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) lists ~9,700 church locations in the state, 2.2% of the US total. That is 35% above the census figure, number 11 of 51 for the size of the gap in percentage terms.
Probably part of that gap is listings nobody has updated. Only 75% of Mississippi's church listings are marked open by their source, against 83% nationally, so more of them have no status at all and some belong to churches that have closed.

Pentecostal comes ahead of Roman Catholic, the reverse of the national order.
