Minnesota compared with the US
Roman Catholic leads the denomination tags in Minnesota, with almost twice the Baptist count; on the US map the order is reversed. Lutheran and Jehovah's Witnesses rows complete the eight largest tags.
Map category tags, not denominational shares.
| Category | Places |
|---|---|
| Christian, tradition not given | ~5,100 |
| Roman Catholic | ~520 |
| Religious organization with a worship name | ~300 |
| Baptist | ~280 |
| Protestant, denomination not given | ~120 |
| Pentecostal | ~110 |
| Lutheran | ~40 |
| Jehovah's Witnesses | ~30 |
Counts are rounded.
The Lutheran row is small. Most listings carry only "Christian, tradition not given", so the tags can't show how many Lutheran churches the state has. Listings here are detailed: 87% name a website, well above the US share, and 83% are marked open, the same as the US (83%).
Questions about churches in Minnesota
How many churches are in Minnesota? 5,970 congregations of all faiths, according to the 2020 U.S. Religion Census. Public maps list ~6,500 church locations, only a little more.
How many churches are in Minneapolis and Saint Paul? Minneapolis addresses hold 8.4% of the state's church locations and Saint Paul is second. Suburbs such as Bloomington are separate rows.
Why is the Lutheran count on the map so small? Most Minnesota listings carry the generic Christian tag rather than a denomination, so many Lutheran churches are probably counted there. The church name may say more than the tag.
