Saint Louis and Kansas City are a near tie: the two cities differ by only a handful of carriers, and each holds about one in ten of the state's total. Both have suburbs in the top 15. On the Saint Louis side are Florissant, Saint Charles, Saint Peters and Fenton; on the Kansas City side, Independence, Lee's Summit, Grandview and Blue Springs. Springfield is a distant third with about a quarter of either big city's count, and Saint Joseph, Joplin, Columbia and Sedalia complete the list.

What these numbers don't show
The Illinois and Kansas halves of the metros. Carriers in East Saint Louis or Kansas City, Kansas, are counted in Illinois and Kansas.
City spelling. "St Louis" and "Saint Louis" are merged, but a carrier that filed an unincorporated area name counts under that name.
Hauling activity. A USDOT number shows a registration, not that trucks are running.
