We don't combine them. Each evidence link opens the adviser's Form ADV record on the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site.

How we rank New York
City
We count main offices whose city is filed on Form ADV as New York, New York City or NYC, with the state New York. In practice these are mostly Manhattan addresses. Offices filed under Brooklyn or another borough's name are not in the count or the table, and neither are Westchester and Long Island.
Count
The city count takes every adviser in the register with such an office, whether or not private equity is most of its business.
Table
The table takes only focused advisers, whose private equity funds are at least half of the private funds they report, and orders them by their exact filed gross private-fund assets.
Same rules as the national ranking
Suspect filings and residence-flagged offices are out, and each row is one SEC filer. The national ranking sets out the full method.
What kind of firms lead in New York
All 25 New York firms also appear in the national top 100, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. leads both tables. Five of the national top ten are in this table: KKR, HPS Investment Partners, Blackstone Management Partners, Coatue Management and General Atlantic Service Company.
Fewer than half of the 25 report only private equity funds. Most also report private funds of another type, and those count toward the measure. Judging by the names alone, the table holds:
- Credit managers. Two Blackstone rows carry "credit" in their names. HPS Investment Partners reports many private funds of other types beside its private equity funds.
- Infrastructure managers. Global Infrastructure Management and Macquarie Infrastructure Partners.
- Growth and crossover investors. Coatue, Tiger Global and D1 Capital, which pass the focus rule because at least half of their private funds are filed as private equity funds.
- Secondaries. Lexington Partners describes itself as a manager of "secondary private equity and co-investment funds", and Strategic Partners Fund Solutions and AlpInvest also rank.
We read these groupings from firm names, fund counts and one firm's own description, not from fund-level strategy data. Form ADV counts any private fund without ordinary redemption rights that isn't a hedge, liquidity, real estate, securitized asset or venture capital fund as private equity, which is why lending and infrastructure managers show up here.
What the New York ranking doesn't show
- Firms with a New York office but a main office elsewhere. Form ADV gives one main office per adviser, so a Boston or Greenwich firm with a large Manhattan team is not here.
- The outer boroughs and suburbs. They fall outside the city definition above.
- Capital raised, fund size, returns or deal count. Gross assets include uncalled commitments and every private fund the adviser reports.
- A city total. We publish no sum of the table, because funds that invest in other funds report the same assets as the funds they hold.
