How many churches are in Virginia?
Virginia had 10,465 congregations of all faiths in the 2020 U.S. Religion Census (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). It counts congregations as their religious bodies reported them.
Overture Maps places (release of 2026-09-23) lists ~14,000 church locations on public maps in Virginia, 36% more than the census. Ranked by that gap in percentage terms, Virginia is number 10 of 51 (states and DC), among the larger gaps. With 84% of listings marked open, close to the US share of 83%, the extra listings are more likely repeats, second campuses and churches started after 2020 than stale entries alone. The map count is number 12 of 51 and 3.2% of the US total; per resident it is 160.7 church locations per 100,000, above the US rate of 129.3.

Virginia's cities are independent of its counties, and city rows follow the city in each address. Henrico, the county next to Richmond, has its own row, probably because some addresses use its name. Northern Virginia shows up as Alexandria and Manassas, with Fredericksburg further south, and the west and south as Roanoke, Lynchburg and Danville. The 15 cities hold 32% of the state's church locations.
