Churches

How many churches are in Texas?

The 2020 U.S. Religion Census counted 29,750 congregations of all faiths in Texas (Grammich et al., Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, 2022). It is the best count of congregations in the state, synagogues, mosques and temples included.

Church locations listed on public maps (Overture Maps, release of 2026-09-23) give a higher figure: ~39,000, the most of any state and 8.9% of the US map count. That is 32% above the census figure. The two count different things. A map keeps listings for churches that have closed or whose status nobody has updated, and a church with a second campus gets a second listing. Congregations that share one building can appear as a single listing, which pulls the other way. Per resident, Texas has 124.3 church locations per 100,000 residents, a little under the US rate of 129.3.

Where churches in Texas are

Houston has more church locations than Dallas and San Antonio together, 10% of the Texas map count. Fort Worth, Austin and El Paso come next. Further down, regional centers such as Lubbock, Tyler, Waco, Amarillo and Beaumont sit in the top 15 next to the Dallas–Fort Worth suburbs of Arlington, Garland and Grand Prairie.

CityListed on public maps
Houston~4,100
Dallas~1,800
San Antonio~1,800
Fort Worth~1,200
Austin~830
El Paso~600
Lubbock~380
Arlington~370
Corpus Christi~370
Tyler~370
Garland~340
Waco~340
Amarillo~330
Beaumont~310
Grand Prairie~280

Counts are rounded.

The 15 cities hold 34% of the state's church locations, so most Texas listings are in smaller cities and towns. Each listing counts once, under the city written in its address; a suburb with its own city name is its own row.

Texas compared with the US

Texas has fewer church locations per resident than the US as a whole (124.3 against 129.3), number 30 of 51. Its largest map tags follow the national pattern: most listings carry only the generic tag "Christian, tradition not given", Baptist is the largest named tag, and Roman Catholic and Pentecostal follow.

Map category tags, not denominational shares.

CategoryPlaces
Christian, tradition not given~26,000
Baptist~7,300
Religious organization with a worship name~2,200
Roman Catholic~1,400
Pentecostal~1,200
Anglican or Episcopal~250
Protestant, denomination not given~240
Jehovah's Witnesses~180

Counts are rounded.

A Jehovah's Witnesses row completes the eight largest tags. A church listed as "Christian, tradition not given" may well be Baptist or Catholic; the map source simply didn't say. For denominations, the census, which counts by religious body, is the better source.

Questions about churches in Texas

How many churches are in Texas? The census figure is 29,750 congregations of all faiths (2020); the census publishes no church-only total for Texas. Public maps list ~39,000 church locations, an upper bound on churches with a map listing.

Which city in Texas has the most churches? Houston, with 10% of the state's church locations on the map. Dallas and San Antonio are close to each other in second and third place, and Fort Worth is fourth.

Why is the Texas map count higher than the census count? Old and repeated listings are the likely reasons. 83% of Texas church listings are marked open by their source; the rest have no status at all, and some of those churches have closed. A congregation can also be listed under two names, or once for each campus.

Can I get a list of churches in Texas? Yes. You can order Texas churches as a state file from the order panel on this page. It has one row per church location, with the phone and website the church publishes and, where it publishes one, the office email and the page where we found it. We update and verify your list when you order, so you receive a fresh list. Delivered within 24 hours, usually much sooner.

What these numbers don't show

Churches alone in the census. The census figure covers all faiths.

Churches open today. A closed church can keep its map listing.

Small congregations without a listing. House churches and congregations renting a school hall are often missing from the map.

Denominations. Map tags are often generic; they are not the share of Baptist or Catholic churches in Texas.

Attendance. A megachurch and a church of 40 members are one row each.
